A walnut longcase with 11" square brass dial and 8 day, five pillared (1 latched) plated movement. Pillars knopped and finned. Fine matting to dial centre, silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and date ring. Diamond half-hour marks indicate that Thomas Bell was probably a quaker. Wheat-ear engraving to dial border.

Very fine wheels and arbors (in the style of John Norcott). Original scape wheel and original early anchor (see photograph). Early pendulum and brass-cased weights.

The later walnut case stands 77.5" high. Forward sliding hood with opening door and with fixed decorative half pillars to the front and quarter pillars to the rear. Glazed side panels.

Thomas Bell of London is a recorded clockmaker of 1691 onwards. He was apprenticed to the famous and highly regarded clockmaker, John Norcott. Later apprenticed to Samuel Mather.
