Early 30-hour Longcase Clock

LONDON

c. 1685
Early London longcase clock

An early London 30-hour clock in later ebonised case.

The four pillared, knopped and finned, 30 hour, bell-striking movement with outside countwheel and early anchor escapement.

The 10 inch dial with finely matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour markers and Arabic five minutes. Winged cherub head and scroll cast spandrels.

The slender ebonised case having 40 inch trunk door with bullseye glass lenticle, the hood with flat top and straight columns.

The fine domed brass pendulum with concentric circle decoration.

It is rare for early clocks of this type to retain their original ebonised cases and so, although this case shows considerable age, it is a later replacement. We do however have an early London clock by Thomas Wise in its original ebonised case (click here to visit page).

Height: 76 inches (193 cm)
